Volunteers and Corby Council are celebrating after Thoroughsale and Hazel Wood in the town received the Green Flag Award from Keep Britain Tidy for the third year running.
The award is a sign to visitors that the ancient woodland boasts the highest standards, have excellent facilities and are well maintained.
It is managed on a day-to-day basis by Corby Council and the Friends of Thoroughsale and Hazel Wood Group, which is made up of more than 30 local volunteers committed to raising standards and protecting the woodland.
All of the volunteers involved are dedicated to preserving and raising the standard of our woodlands and meet every day to carry out conservation work.
Recent improvements include new lighting on the woodland walkway that leads from the swimming pool to the boating lake and an educational cabin which is used by woodland volunteers for training and team-building exercises.
Corby Council leader, Cllr Tom Beattie, said: “We’re very proud to be able to raise the Green Flag for the third year running. It’s a fine example of the quality of Corby’s green spaces and a real tribute to our hard-working volunteers who are behind the upkeep of the woodlands.”
Keep Britain Tidy’s Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who, through their dedication and hard work, have helped to create these fantastic places for everyone to enjoy.
“Quality green spaces are a vital resource for communities and that is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.”
