The newly formed Rivers Heritage Site & Orchard (RHSO) group has spades and trowels at the ready for its first day of maintenance.

Volunteers are being encouraged to visit this Sunday (July 6) in order to “learn a new skill, help maintain a local historic site and make new friends”.

Work at the centuries-old Rivers Nursery, which has links to Charles Darwin, will centre around trees new to the site.

It is hoped the sessions will become a monthly feature for RHSO, which formed in May after the orchard’s previous maintenance group folded.

Those wishing to help should wear wellies and long trousers. Tools and instruction will be provided.

The orchard will be open between 10.30am and 12.30pm. Access can be gained via The Crest, off Brook Lane.
