Tree felling campaigners in Sheffield have been highlighting their cause during National Tree Week.
Protests took place outside Sheffield Town Hall on Wednesday as Sheffield Council held its last full meeting this year.
Campaigns have sprung up around the city in recent months over controversial felling as part of the council’s Streets Ahead contract.
Inside the chamber, Coun Terry Fox was quizzed by residents on when the next highway tree forum would be held and the cost of felling trees compared to other solutions. A draft tree strategy was due to be revealed at the next forum, which was expected this month but has been delayed.
Sheffield Tree Action Groups also teamed up with illustrator Lydia Monks to celebrate the awareness week in schools.
Children wrote about why trees were good and drew pictures to illustrate it while campaigners led assemblies on the importance of retaining mature trees and ‘magnificence of the urban forest.’ Youngsters also dressed up as creatures that live in trees such as bats, owls and bees.
