Volunteer Roger Parkinson has picked up an award for his inspiring work with the Woodland Trust.

Mr Parkinson has helped plant thousands of trees across Wakefield and has given talks to others about the importance of woodland and the environment.

He received the Sapling Award for the most inspiring creator of community woodland at the trust’s annual volunteer conference earlier this month.

Mr Parkinson said: “It is vital for the next generation to understand why trees are so important and that all of us have the ability to make a difference.

“Planting trees is an investment for the future that will have a better return than any bank. I am proud to be a volunteer with the Woodland Trust and would recommend it to anyone who wants to do something really positive.”

The annual awards ceremony recognises the talent and dedication of the trust’s most outstanding volunteers. Mr Parkinson was nominated by volunteering officer Shona Morton.

She said: “Roger embodies so many of the qualities that make the Woodland Trust tick, and it is impossible to capture the impact of his volunteering in a few words.

“The increasingly green Wakefield area testifies to his continuing dedication and hard work. His friendly approach and infectious enthusiasm inspires everyone he works with and we couldn’t wish for a more effective volunteer.”
