Pupils from a junior school got in touch with nature during a visit to a common.
The youngsters from Locks Heath Junior School swapped their usual classrooms for Warsash Common on Wednesday to learn about the great outdoors.
The pupils took part in a range of engaging activities including a tree trail talk with one of the council’s countryside officers. They also got to try their hands at pond dipping, looking at animal footprints and sketching.
Teacher Francesca Telford said: ‘All the children thoroughly enjoyed their day and loved learning about their local environment.
‘We couldn’t have wished for better weather, either.’
New to the site, the tree trail is an educational path that features 12 native species of tree, including a large apple tree with hanging poems.
The trees feature individual information sheets containing interesting ecological and botanical facts.
Executive member for leisure Connie Hockley said: ‘It was a great opportunity for the children.
‘I’m glad an enjoyable day was had by all.’
