The London Tree Officers Association (LTOA), with the support of the Greater London Authority, have devised a straightforward means of estimating tree canopy cover in London boroughs. The tool is called OSCCA, which stands for Open Source Canopy Cover Audit.
OSCCA allows users to generate random points on aerial images and then classify them according to land cover, (trees, roads, water, etc). This quickly lets you build up a reliable tree canopy cover estimate. The LTOA is now asking all London boroughs to complete and return a borough baseline canopy cover survey as we feel this will be beneficial for boroughs as well as gathering London-wide information.
