Charity Spirit of Africa will make a thanksgiving tree in Prudhoe to raise funds for orphaned children
A charity fundraiser will see a tree in Northumberland transformed into a sea of colour.
A group of ninja knitters from Spirit of Africa have announced they intend to ‘yarn-bomb’ a tree in a secret location in Prudhoe.
Yarn-bombing is an unofficial type of public art where woolen works are wrapped around trees, poles and other objects in public places.
In this case, volunteers at the Spirit of Africa will create a thanksgiving tree using patches of colourful crocheted yarn.
Members of public can buy a patch in memory of a loved one that will go on the tree.
Alan Moore, from the charity, said: “In October this year, Spirit of Africa are going to ‘yarn-bomb’ a tree at a secret location in Prudhoe.
“Yarn-bombing is when you cover something in colourful crocheted yarn and we have chosen a tree as our focal point.
“The ‘Thanksgiving Tree’, as it will be known, will be a chance to give thanks and remember loved ones past and present.
“People can get involved now by donating just £5 towards a square on the tree and, in turn, they will get their dedication in the book next to the tree in memory or in thanksgiving of someone special.
“The tree will be revealed overnight in October and the spectacle of colour will be exciting to see on the morning of Sunday, October 12, somewhere in Prudhoe.
“The money raised from the tree goes to support our charity and its goals in South Africa helping to make a difference for children.”
The aim of Spirit of Africa charity is to raise money to create foster care homes for orphans, or children, in South Africa, who have no one to care for them or no home.
They raise money to ensure the children have access to affordable health care and inoculation programmes.
