More than 30 trees were planted in Faversham this week to mark the final phase in a year-long project across Swale.
The Swale Big Tree Plant began in January 2014 and aimed to bring together residents to learn new skills and enhance their local area.
Twenty-two people helped to plant the trees in Broomfield Road on Monday. Six types of trees were planted, including wild cherry, dogwood and hazel.
This final phase of the project is made up of four tree-planting events, taking place in Faversham, Sheerness and Sittingbourne between January and March.
Anyone is welcome to participate and help plant the 784 trees.
The project is coordinated by Skillnet Group Community Interest Company, a social enterprise consisting of people with and without learning difficulties working to achieve equality.
They are funded by The Big Tree Plant and Awards for All and run a gardening group at the Bob Fowler Community Allotment, in Sittingbourne, for adults with learning difficulties or mental ill health. Darren Gibbons, who volunteers with Skillnet Group, said: “I have enjoyed working outdoors in a group at the allotment and so I look forward to doing more of this.”
Skillnet Group is working in collaboration with AmicusHorizon housing association and Blenwood Grounds Maintenance, with volunteers from Bob Fowler Community Allotment, Faversham Umbrella Centre, Kent Wildlife Trust, Swale Friends of the Earth, 3rd Milton Regis Scout Group, Swale Action to End Domestic Violence, Restoration Youth, Friends of Milton Regis Country Park and Swale in Bloom.
