Bartlett Tree Experts is expanding its scientific tree care solutions in the UK with a new arboretum and research lab centre in Spencers Wood.

The new 50-acre arboretum and laboratory, situated in Reading, will serve as a research and educational centre for Bartlett clients and arborists across the UK and Ireland.

Facilities at the laboratory will include office, research, diagnostic and lecture space. While the new arboretum, which Bartlett calls a “living museum” will feature expansive environmentally tolerant collections of “rare and unusual” trees.

As well as a collection of woody plants, woodland walking trails and native wildlife habitats in an effort to improve the site’s biodiversity.

The grounds will also provide testing plots for long-term arboricultural research trials and study.

Robert A. Bartlett, Jr., chairman and CEO of Bartlett Tree Experts says the new arboretum and research lab “will provide our research scientists and plant pathologists with the enhanced, state-of-the-art capabilities to conduct the most advanced research and testing, allowing them to advise our arborists on the latest advances in arboriculture.”

President and chief operating officer of Bartlett Tree Experts adds that the idea for the new site came from Bartlett team members expressing the need to have “greater access to the latest and most comprehensive tree and woody plant research to help our residential and commercial clients maintain healthy landscapes.”

The project is being developed in partnership with a team of 20 Bartlett arborists, research scientists, architects and specialty consultants, including Snug Architects – Architect, Harris Bugg Studio – Landscape Master Plan, and UBU – Landscape Architect.
