A massive tree-cutting operation has been carried out by Southern Electric in a bid to end power cut misery for people in villages around Midhurst.

Villagers suffered several days without power over the Christmas holiday 20 months ago when storms battered the country and trees fell over electricity lines.

There have been nine further power cuts in the areas in the last year.

But yesterday (Tuesday, August 18) 200 tree-cutters and specialist contractors moved in and carried out the £350,000 work in the Milland, Redford and Linch area in the biggest-ever tree-cutting operation undertaken by the power company.

They turned the power off in the villages between 8am-6pm and worked across an area the size of 30 football pitches.
