Local community unites to support The Dutchy of Cornwall expansion

Last Sunday, 27 volunteers from the local community joined Moor Trees and The Duchy of Cornwall to gather over 5,000 acorns from Wistman’s Wood on Dartmoor.

The collection is one part of the process to support The Dutchy of Cornwall’s expansion and regeneration landscape scale plant at Wistman’s Wood.

Using natural processes to expand the oak woodland, to increase resilience and enhance the surrounding areas.

The Wood’s rare ecosystem requires new trees to be grown from seed gathered from the site, to maintain genetic qualities.

The acorns along with the rowan seeds gathered last month have been taken to Moor Trees’ Dartington Community Tree Nursery to be processed for germination.

The seeds will remain at the nursery for two years before being planted on the periphery of the woodland and the valley opposite.

Moor Trees is hosting a Q&A at Dartington Tree Nursery on Wednesday 25 October from 11am to 3pm to meet the volunteers and learn more about the process of germinating and growing trees in the community tree nursery.
