John Mackay to present Royal Forestry Society’s inaugural NDG James Memorial Lecture

John Mackay, Wood Professor of Forest Science, will present Forest Genetics –  the Royal Forestry Society’s inaugural NDG James Memorial Lecture – at Corpus Christie College, University of Oxford on Tuesday 24 October.

NDG, Jimmy James, as he was known, was one of the best known names in British private forestry and the author of a number of forestry books. The lectures are made possible by the generosity of the James family.

In this first lecture, Professor Mackay will explain in a way that is accessible to the layman, how the science of genomics is breaking new ground in the quest to address the challenges posed to our trees and woods by climate change and the increasing number and severity of pests and diseases, such as ash dieback.

He will demonstrate how genomics is being applied to improve the resilience of our trees and woods to the diseases currently threatening UK woodlands and how the science of genomics links to other research initiatives intended to improve tree health and productivity.

The lecture, which begins at 6pm, is open to members and non members of the RFS, but numbers are limited.
