Isle of Wight enjoys tree planting bonanza

Some 420 native trees have been planted by volunteers on the Isle of Wight on two community sites.

Freshwater Parish Council, on the west of the Island, issued a call for volunteers to plant trees on the Stroud and Jubilee Fields. The aim was to plant around 400 trees in day; however, the work was completed in only three hours. A total of 24 volunteers took part, which was more than the council anticipated. The volunteers needed to book in advance and the event ended up being oversubscribed.

The event was organised by local residents, Tom Murphy and Carol Bray. Mr Murphy had nurtured the trees for 12 months after an earlier event was cancelled because of the lockdown.

As the COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease, there are plans to hold further tree planting events and to allow larger numbers to take part.
