Glengarry Community Woodland Steering Group has applied to the National Forest Land Scheme (NFLS) to purchase the former Forestry Depot and adjacent woodland in Invergarry. The area amounts to approximately 30.5 hectares.
Administered by Forestry Commission Scotland, the NFLS gives communities the opportunity to bid to buy or lease national forest land on the basis that it provides increased public benefits.
The group have said that, historically, employment in the area was based on agriculture, forestry and some aquaculture but that all the major employers have reduced their numbers. The say that purchasing this land will help to retain people within the area by providing increased economic activity and a renewed focus
A 28-day open consultation period is required by the scheme and public comments on any aspect of the proposal are welcome.
Details of the application can be viewed on line at www.forestry.gov.uk/nfls and all comments on the proposals detailed in the application must be submitted by Wednesday 1 October.
