‘Securing our urban forests of the future’ will be held on Wednesday 2 May at Whitworth Art Gallery, and brings together key organisations in the urban forestry sector, as well as sharing best practice from across the globe.
This seminar is for all those with a vested interest in securing our trees and woods for the benefit of both people and the environment and will bring together delegates from local authorities, housing associations and universities as well as conservation organisations, environmental consultants and landscape architects.
The event is organised by City of Trees, a movement which aims to plant 3 million trees, one for every man, woman and child across Greater Manchester within a generation.
The seminar will see keynote speakers from Urban Forest Innovations Inc. a Canada-based consultancy which specialises in the preservation, enhancement and management of all aspects of the urban forest.
Philip van Wassenaer, B.Sc., MFC. will share his 20 plus year knowledge of Urban Forest Management Planning; what it entails; why is it important and what does it help to achieve.
Alexander Satel will also be joining from the consultancy and will talk about his experiences of planting in hard spaces, sharing innovative solutions from across the globe’ on how to incorporate green infrastructure and urban design, including Toronto’s ‘GreenStreet’s programme.
Other speakers include Pete Stringer, City of Trees, who will talk about the plans for ‘All Our Trees’ – a ground-breaking ‘greenprint’ to help protect and preserve the trees and woods across Greater Manchester.
Chris Waterfield from The Woodland Trust will share the exciting masterplan for the Smithills Estate in Bolton.
Charlotte Markey, Database Research & Lead Management, GreenBlueUrban will be sharing insights on how to reducing long-term management costs through high quality specifications.
Scott Fitzgerald, Managing Director, UrbanGreen Space Ltd will sharing insights from recent projects where social media has been used successfully to engage both the public and partners leading to a greater understanding and appreciation of urban trees.
The session will finish on a question and answer session followed by a networking lunch and an optional walking tour of the newly created University of Manchester Tree Trail.
The seminar is being supported by Hadfield Wood Recyclers, as well as GreenBlue Urban and Barcham Trees.
