Could the storms fuel a rise in tree surgery cons?

Residents in Cornwall have been told that there has been a rise in the number of conmen offering tree surgery work. Trading Standards in the Duchy says the tradesmen call without an appointment.

Officers warn the work is substandard and often charged at a much higher price than a genuine trader would normally charge.

It is feared the situation will be made worse by an increase in damage, triggered by the recent storms.

Leanne McLean, Lead Officer for Doorstep Crime said: “Given the high winds forecast for today, we anticipate the amount of cold calls residents receive offering this kind of service may well increase over the coming weeks.

“Residents should never agree a contract with someone who cold calls them at home. Legitimate businesses do not call without an appointment.”
