A Blandford teenager has begun a new career as a tree surgeon after working in retail.

Jade Paris, who is 18, was looking for a new challenge when she called the south coast agency, City Centre Recruitment which supplies staff to the South Somerset District Council’s gardening, street scene and nursery operations.

Jade is now learning the safety and technical aspects of the job and has become a valued member of the tree surgery team.

Jade said: “I studied outdoor education at college, so I do enjoy being out and about. I have learnt about specialist rescue, chain saw techniques, tree inspection and tree felling. This in a totally amazing job and I hope to make this my chosen career.”

Nick Graff, Business Development Manager for the Weymouth and Yeovil offices, said: “We had a wide range of jobs available, and when Jade applied we discussed the gardening positions.

“Her application was successful and she showed an interest in a job with the specialist arboriculture team. Since then, she has really demonstrated an aptitude for the work and is now undertaking ongoing training with the view to a permanent position.”

The team manage tree stock on land and properties owned and managed by South Somerset District Council and also provide commercial tree surgery and arboricultural services.

Jon Brown, who heads the team, said: “There are very few specialist tree experts, and therefore our services are very much in demand. We are a busy crew with a hectic workload, and Jade is going to be an asset to our team.”
