PROTECTORS of historic land in Ashby have slammed ‘wanton vandals’ after a tree was severely damaged.
Members of the Friends of the Bath Grounds carried out emergency repairs after the tree was stripped of bark, but fear it may be beyond help.
Rope has been tied around the damaged section but the group is concerned about the effect it will have on the ‘much-loved’ tree.
A group spokesman said: “It is not known who carried out this wanton vandalism.
“Removal of the bark to such an extent means that it won’t be able to transport foods from leaves to the roots – so the tree will not be able to feed itself.”
