The Women’s Institute’s Bestwood Village branch has planted an ancient tree to commemorate its 100th anniversary year.
The group, which is also preparing to mark its own 10th birthday decided to combine the two milestones with a special ceremony in September.
“This is no ordinary tree,” said KayBrown of Bestwood WI. “It is a Ginkgo tree. It has been planted in the compound of the Bestwood Colliery Winding Engine and it represents the link back to our mining history.
“Ginkgo trees are a very close relative of the ancient trees which formed the coal on which the village was so dependent which is why we chose it.”
The tree was planted at Bestwood Country Park on September 23 by chairman of the Nottingham WI Federation and guest of honour, Jane Jefferson, with Bestwood president Brenda Langsdale, assisted by community liaison officer from Nottinghamshire County Council, Sue Macdonald.
“The event went really well, despite hitting some hard ground,” added Kay. “Each member, including our oldest and newest member took part in the occasion to make it as inclusive as possible.”
The tree planting was followed by a regular meeting with guests from the Eric Coates Society providing an interesting talk and musical interlude.
“The tree is long-lasting so we chose it as a growing memorial that will still be there in 100 years for people to enjoy.”
Bestwood Village WI paid for the tree through their fundraising events. The next one takes place at the Dynamo House on Sunday October 25 from 11am-3pm in the form of a craft fair.
