This year’s Tree of the Year has been announced by the Woodland Trust.
The Wrexham sweet chestnut, growing in Action Park, Wrexham won with 17% of the vote.
This year’s national contest centred around ancient and veteran trees in urban spaces, with every entry considered to be ‘locally-loved’ and beneficial to wildlife.
The welsh giant is thought to be almost 500 years old, enduring post-war firewood plundering in the 1940’s, and dozens of storms.
At almost half a millennium, the Wrexham sweet chestnut is known by locals for its beauty and history, playing host to countless picnics and tree parties, and will now be known as the country’s first winning Tree of the Year entry.
The Crouch Oak of Addlestone, Surrey came second with 14% of the vote and a sweet chestnut in London’s Greenwich Park came third with 13%.
