Lancaster mayor opposes city’s mass tree chop

  Plans to chop down all the trees in Market Square have been condemned by the Mayor of Lancaster. Coun Jon Barry said the removal of the seven mature lime trees would make the centre of the city a “sterile and uninviting place”. Lancaster City Council said that the trees were affecting businesses and visitors due to their sheer size, and were a haven for aphids which were causing the new surfacing to become slippery when wet.
